South Korea 2011 Day 9 – Seongsan Ilchulbong, Manjanggul Lava Cave, Sangumburi Crater, Jeju Folk Museum and Haenyeo Woman Divers

View from a top of the Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as Sunrise Peak! We were here early in the morning to catch the sunrise but the weather wasn’t playing nice and so we couldn’t see any sun. This was the shot of the crater of this tuff cone, so huge I could only capture it all by shooting multiple shots and stitching them into a panoramic one when back on my laptop.
Also from the top, the view on the other side showed the surrounding Jeju landscape. I was still wishing for the weather to be better.
  • Almost the same shot, different that this was the immediate vicinity of the peak. The small road was the walking path that led from the carpark and entrance to the bottom of this tuff cone.

  • Then we went for breakfast at the Dunkin Donuts’ store there. Look at how happy my coffee cup was.
  • So this was the sunrise we were hoping to see. This was the giant poster there of what good looks like.
Slightly less than left an hour of drive from Seongsan Ilchulbong brought us to Manjanggul Lava tube, the 2nd longest of such tunnel in Jeju. A Lava tube is a naturally formed tunnel that used to be the route of molten lava as it exits from a volcano and flows underneath the hardened surface of previous lava flow.

  • The tunnel is huge. The ceiling quite tall at some sections. The path is lighted.

  • Went back to Seongsan Ilchulbong, this shore beside it.
  • Wildflowers were growing
  • Found the building where the Haenyeo operate.
  • Photo of one of them suiting up.
  • The ground around the area had signs of lava from many years ago
  • At the building, seafood kept fresh are being prepared for diners.
  • Had a photo opportunity with one of them. There were really impressive, going to the sea without an oxygen tank and with all these gears.
  • One of them returned with a live octopus! I am truly impressed.
  • Close up of the types of fresh seafood. Frankly, I can only recognise the abalone.
  • Had an abalone with at an affordable price of 10k won (if I remembered right). A little salty though.
A visit to see the Haenyeo
We visited another crater, called the Sangumburi Crater. This crater was very big! The size of it can only be captured with a panoramic shot of it!
  • The area is paved really nicely to walk around with the tall silvergrass on the sides of the pathway.

  • Then we visited the Jeju folk museum to take a look into the past of Jeju lives.

  • These tiny huts of primitive material but looking really cosy

  • Statue of rattan craftsman weaving a basket
  • Cows having their meal of hay
  • On the inside of one of the buildings. A single wooden pillar supporting the roof, with lots of space.
  • A compound of a typical village
  • Traditional sedan carried by 4 people. Looked like one used for ceremonial purposes.
  • Chinese chess game, probably influences from nearby China.
  • Another building, could remember what this was for
  • Old items kept in the museum, these are probably headgears of officials.
  • A water well
  • Government administration buildings
  • These buildings were used for filming Korean dramas with historical story setting.
  • Baby goats were kept there.
  • Another set of buildings were goverment buildings.
  • This was the prison.
Jeju Folk Museum
  • Went to the E-Mart mall for our dinner.
  • Settled for some fast food after days of Korean food.
