Athens 2011 Day 13 – Explore the ruins in Athens

A little market we walked past as we began the day.

A short distance walk we arrived at the Ancient Agora.

  • This building is the Stoa of Attalos, buildings with impressive columns that was used as a museum.
  • This is the church of Holy Apostles
  • Saw a view of the Temple of Hephaestus.
  • The details on the columns are amazing.
  • Close up view of the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the most well preserved temple.
  • From there we could see a view of the Agora
  • Statues of Emperor Hadrian
  • Another view of the temple.
  • Many statues lined the street that was supposed to be the Odeon of Agrippa.
  • Statue of Goddess Aphrodite
  • Head statue of Triton
  • Many columns belonging to the Stoa of Attalos.
  • Odeon of Herodes Atticus just after the passing through the entrance
  • View climbing up to to the Acropolis
  • High ceilings.
  • The Erechthetion is the temple dedicated to Athena and Poseidon.
  • Porch of caryatids, the originals replaced with these.

  • Entering the Odeon of Herodes Atticus
  • The view on the outside with all the arches.
  • This is called the Bema of Phaidros and used as a stage front in the older theatre of Dionysus.
  • Seats for VIPs called Prohedria.

Then we walked to another area where the Temple of Olympian Zeus was.

  • This was the compound with the ruins and what’s left of the temple.
  • Mesmerised with the details on the column.

Then we continued to walk taking Lisikratous street towards the Roman Forum

  • Saw this Choragic Monument of Lysicrates along the way.
  • Walking thru streets like these
  • We saw the Tower of the Winds in the Roman Forum
  • The angels relief at the top was so nice.
  • This building was the Fethiye Mosque Museum.
  • Not much standing, except a facade with 3 arches belonging to the Agoranomeion.
  • The Gate of Athena Archegetis of the Roman Forum.

Later we decided to travel to Kerameikos

  • At the cemetery we saw these impressive monument.
  • And wild tortoises roaming around.
  • This was supposedly the path to Plato’s academy.
  • Church of the Holy Trinity
  • Thought this tree looks interesting
  • Inside the Archaeological Museum of Kerameikos where the actual ones were kept.
  • There was a winged sphinx.
  • Marble bull sculpture from the Dionysios’ grave.

That marks the end of the Athens exploration

  • We made a short visit to the Acropolis Museum which was built on top of an ancient Athenian Neighbourhood. There was also the original frieze of the Parthenon inside the museum
  • That was the end of our Greek trip, we flew Easyjet to London at night.
